The Secret of Glass Wine Bottle
The secrets about wine bottles are so complete! Why the standard bottle is 750ML? In the 17th century, the United Kingdom was already the largest wine importer in Bordeaux, France. The two countries used different measurement units. The United Kingdom used gallons and France used liters. One gallon is about 4.546 liters. For the convenience of calculation, people unified the transportation unit to 50 gallons, which is 225 liters.Later, in order to meet the needs of international trade, the standardization of the shape of wine bottles became the general trend. In order to get a convenient integer, the Bordeaux people divided a 225-liter oak barrel of wine into 300 bottles, each with a capacity of 750 ml.Part 02 Why are there many types of wine bottles? In the early days, wine bottles were mostly blown by hand, and their shapes were not stable. In the 18th century, wine bottles began to be manufactured using molds, which can have a consistent shape and bottleneck.People have developed various bottle types, such as Bordeaux bottles, Burgundy bottles, champagne bottles, etc., according to the style and characteristics of the growing regions and grape varieties, and they are still in use today.Under the premise that the winemaker has an idea and the budget allows, some wineries will now choose to customize the bottle type. Part 03 Why are the bottles mostly dark? The wine bottle is made by heating quartz sand at high temperature, and the color is formed by adding minerals such as iron (brown, green, etc.). Dark wine bottles can effectively protect wine from ultraviolet radiation. Part 04 What does the weight of the wine bottle do? In addition to the material, the weight of the wine bottle is mostly determined by the thickness. Thick walls are sometimes necessary, because the thicker the wall, the more resistant the bottle is. For sparkling wine, thick bottle walls can balance the internal air pressure; for large bottled wines, thick bottle walls can carry more liquor; thick bottles can also increase the quality and luxury of the wine. Most wine bottles have grooves at the bottom. There are two main reasons for this design. When pouring the wine, the sediment is not easy to rise, so that the poured wine is clearer, and it is helpful to collect the sediment when the wine bottle is standing still.Convenient for stacking wine bottles, hand-held wine bottles for pouring, increasing structural strength and so on.
